Description

Learn the basics involved in firearm safety, shooting and maintaining a pistol.

This course is for the beginner / novice shooter and/or refresher course for the experienced shooter. This is our minimum course and will qualify you to apply for the Florida Concealed Weapon/Firearm License. A Certificate of Completion is awarded.

The goal of this course is to teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely, culminating with the  Basics of Pistol Shooting Certification.

During this course, students will receive intensive lessons in firearm safety and safe gun handling practices, learn about the various firearm action types and their functioning, be introduced to the fundamentals of pistol marksmanship (proper grip, stance, aiming, breath control, hold control, trigger control and follow-through), various pistol firing positions, practical exercises on the firing range, feedback during live-fire exercise, Range Rules, instructions on the proper cleaning and storage of your firearm, a summary of pistol sports and activities, and information on future intermediate and advanced handgun courses.

There are two major components to the course. A classroom component and a live-fire hand-gun range component. In order to successfully complete the course, students must attendthe classroom portion and successfully qualify with a pistol during the live-fire portion of the course.

Pre-requisite Qualifications for this Course

You must be a law-abiding citizen without a criminal record. This course will appeal to the beginner and/or novice shooter or gun owner who wants to brush up their gun handling skills, knowledge, and safety. The completion certificate of this course is a required document for you to apply for your Florida Concealed Weapon/Firearm License. Additionally, you must successfully complete this course or have adequate firearm training and/or experience to enroll in the NRA Basics of Home Protection Course

What to Bring to Class - Equipment Requirements

  • Completed Training Waiver form.
  • Bring an unloaded, cased and operable handgun. Please keep your firearm choices between .22 caliber - .45 caliber. (if owned). All firearms must be inspected by the Instructor prior to use on the range and the Instructor reserves the right to reject any firearm if he feels it is unsafe for use.
  • Firearm rentals are available. See Firearm Rentals above.
  • Eye Protection (if owned).
  • Two (2) or more magazines or speed loaders for that pistol.
  • Hearing Protection (if owned).
  • A minimum of 100 rounds of high quality factory made target ammunition for that pistol. No reloads, tracer or incendiary ammunition is allowed on the range. If you are not sure what type of ammunition to purchase for your pistol, please call for information.

Many people like to take notes during the class, so bringing pen and paper to class can be useful.

Dress Requirements

You should wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for the expected weather of the day. It is advisable to wear a hat on the range. Flip-flops, open-toes shoes, and low or scoop shirts are NOT recommended for the range due to hot shell casings ejecting from the firearms which could injure you.

 

THIS COURSE EXCEEDS REQUIREMENTS FOR FLORIDA CONCEALED FIREARM/WEAPON LICENSE. YOUR FLORIDA LICENSE IS VALID IN 37* STATES.
